St. Catherine's Castle in West Chester, OH
Many thanks to Larry Kraft, who passed along photographs of his first JigStones project. This certainly outdoes the original design in scope. The model sets the stage as visitors along the walkway to his 50x50' garden railroad layout. The setting includes a moat and drawbridge..
Combine Stone Faces
Don't be afraid to combine stone faces on your structures. Pay attention to buildings in your travels while walking or driving to notice the variety of ways stone has been used. Especially notice the older buildings where pre-cinder block foundations were made of squared, random or fieldstone.
Somewhere during the early part of the 20th century, it became fashionable to face the stone with a smooth layer of mortar to hide or dress up the stone.
You may want to age your "faced" foundations by purposely letting part of the stone to peek out giving the impression that the mortar has chipped off.
Another way to give your JigStones structure a fresh look is to "stucco" your finished model with mortar.
